CRIME
Albuquerque consistently ranks among the most crime-ridden cities in America due to misguided state and local policies. Policies like the Case Management Order which leads to, dismissals on technicalities, issuing driver's licenses to illegal aliens, get out of jail free bail laws, and the city’s sanctuary status have exacerbated crime. These measures, combined with demonizing the police, have hindered law enforcement and led to skyrocketing crime rates. The 2023 HB4 law, extending the voting rights of convicted felons, further demonstrates this legislative negligence. I will work to overhaul the criminal justice system by repealing these pro-criminal, anti-police laws.
EDUCATION
New Mexico’s education system, rated the worst in the nation, despite high per-student spending. In Albuquerque, students can fail every class yet still progress to the next grade, which is unfair and detrimental to their learning. Dropouts are at great risk of running afoul the criminal justice system. Effective educational reforms are well-known; we just need to implement them. I will address the root causes of our dysfunctional education system, support school choice, and advocate for using public funds for private education.
ECONOMY
New Mexico’s economy suffers from a poor business climate, high crime rates, and an ineffective education system. Excessive state spending and taxes deter investment and employment. The state's unique gross receipts tax is a significant barrier for businesses. This is one of few states that taxes retirees’ social security income. Recent legislation has introduced further obstacles, reminiscent of California’s restrictive business environment. I will work to cap state spending, reform taxes, and eliminate unnecessary regulations to boost our economy.
HEALTH CARE
New Mexico faces a severe health care crisis, with long wait times for specialists and a significant decline in primary care physicians. Legislative changes in 2021 drove this bad situation. Now, increased malpractice caps have driven insurance rates up, further discouraging medical practice in the state. I will work to attract more doctors to New Mexico and improve our health care system.
CIVIL LIBERTIES
As a lifelong member of the NRA, I stand firm on protecting civil liberties. The governor's recent "health orders" to suspend gun rights and the extended COVID-19 emergency measures lasting years represent severe overreaches. The legislature’s inaction in these instances is unacceptable. I will ensure that the legislature has the authority to curb any governor’s abuse of emergency powers and safeguard our rights.
